What
is a digger bucket?
A digger bucket is a slightly oversized bucket spaced
intermittently between segments of plastic buckets. The digger
bucket is made of a more impact and abrasion resistant material
than the plastic buckets. Digger buckets are designed to be
approximately ¼” larger in both width and projection to clear a
path through the boot section of the elevator. Digger buckets
help to minimize wear of plastic buckets by allowing them to
travel through the boot section of the bucket elevator through a
trail that is mostly clear of material. Digger buckets are
typically spaced as every 8th or 10th bucket on the belt or
chain.
From what types of materials are digger buckets constructed?
Digger buckets for CC style grain elevator cups must be
fabricated from carbon steel or stainless steel. As stated
above, the width and projection should be approximately ¼”
larger than the plastic buckets. Also, a reinforcing strip of
metal is welded across the front lip to increase life and
digging strength.
Digger buckets for AA style industrial elevator cups can be
fabricated from carbon steel or stainless steel. They can also
be made from either ductile iron or malleable iron...provided
that the ductile iron or malleable iron buckets are sized
properly to function as diggers.
Is the DI-MAX AA style ductile iron a good digger bucket
option?
Yes. The DI-MAX AA style ductile iron elevator bucket was
specifically designed to function as a digger bucket for the
MAXI-TUFF line of AA style industrial duty plastic elevator
buckets. The DI-MAX is made from durable ductile iron material.
Although they look very similar when viewed side-by-side,
ductile iron is far more abrasion and impact resistant than
malleable iron. The DI-MAX is designed to be approximately ¼”
larger in both width and projection than the corresponding
MAXI-TUFF elevator bucket. Also, the DI-MAX is a much lower cost
option as compared to a continuously welded steel elevator
bucket.
Will all AA style ductile iron or malleable iron buckets
function as a digger bucket?
Unfortunately, the answer to this question is no. Most cast
buckets are approximately the same size or even smaller than AA
style industrial plastic buckets. Oftentimes, the plastic bucket
will dig for the cast buckets until enough plastic material is
worn away, finally allowing the cast buckets to begin to dig.
